About Electromagnetic Waves

Electromagnetic waves connect electricity and magnetism to shape our modern world. They explain how changing electric fields generate magnetic fields and vice versa, allowing energy to travel across space without any physical medium. Maxwell introduced a brilliant concept to complete Ampere's law, demonstrating that a changing electric field behaves like a current, termed displacement current. This insight proved such waves must exist. Students learn how these waves move at a constant speed in a vacuum, carry energy, and oscillate perpendicular to each other and their direction of travel. The chapter then maps out the electromagnetic spectrum, arranging waves from radio waves to gamma rays based on their frequencies.
